The Monument of Paisiy Hilendarski (1722-1773) is erected on the Vazrajdane square in Bansko. Together with Cultural and Informational Center St Otets Paisiy and the Day of Paisiy Hilendarski, this monument is part of Bansko's way to commemorate one of the greatest Bulgarian philosophers. Paisiy Hilendarski (St Paisius of Hilendar) is born in 1722 in the municipality of Samokov, most probably in Bansko. His father is from this town and his mother - from the Samokov village Dospey. It is supposed that Paisiy Hilendarski died on his way to Mount Athos in the village of Ambelino (today Asenovgrad). In 1745, when he is 23 years old, Paisiy goes to the Hilendar (Zograf) Monastery in Mount Athos, where he became a hieromonk and a hegumen (abbot). There for years he has been studying, researching and collecting materials for his master work - the History of Bulgarians, written from 1760 to 1762. during his service in Bulgaria, Paisiy carried his books with himself, so he could spread it among Bulgarians. The first copy of the books is made in 1765 by Sofroniy Vrachanski (Sophronius of Vratsa). With its ideas for national self-awareness and liberation from Ottoman domination, this one and only work of the monk put the beginning of the Bulgarian National Revival. The monument of Paisiy Hilendarski in Bansko is created in 1976 by the sculptor Stoycho Todorov. It is supposed that on the spot, that it is erected used to be located the house of Paisiy Hilendarski. The monument is part of the architectural ensemble on the Pirin Street in Bansko, which also includes Democracy Sqaure to the sout, Vazrajdane square, the tower, the main entrance and the water tap of the Holy Trinity Church, the entrance of the Benina House, Vakanova House, Molerova House, Usheva House and the Hadjiruskovi Houses.
